Basic Jewelry Wax Carving

Learn or refresh your BASIC WAX CARVING skills with instructor & master artist Frank Goss. A 2 day/12 hour course covering the very basics of wax design, design layout, tools & their uses, basic carving & wax build-up techniques. Using these learned skills, you will create & go home with your own unique wax pattern for a 5 to 6 mm band or pendant.  


-Basic carving techniques

-Popular waxes available commercially and their properties

-How to make sure your design is centered

-Various methods of pattern transfer

-How to tell the thickness of the wax as you carve

-Basic textures that can be applied with simple tools you already have at your bench.

-Specialty tools that can be made at the bench

The first class day will be a lecture demonstrating the various techniques above. On the second day, you will design & layout your wax model, discuss your design & layout with the instructor and begin carving your model. The last day will be a four-hour hands-on practice session. With the instructor’s guidance, you will apply & use the skills you have learned, creating your own unique carved wax pattern model (5 to 6 mm band or pendant) to take home

Students are asked to bring the basic hand tools they have that are listed on the“Student Tool List” below.  Be prepared with pencil & paper to take notes.  The material fee covers the wax along with some task-specific items.  The instructor's specialized tools will be available for you to use during the workshop.

STUDENT TOOL LIST: Basic hand tools:

Dividers, flat file, ring file, needle files, scribe, millimeter gauge, x-acto knife, square, drill bits (0.05mm & 0.07mm), protractor, ruler (inches/mm), saw frame, scraper-three corner or a ring sizer. Wax tools (optional). Notebook and pencil/pen.
